Among the recent Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project visitations was the visit to Shepparton High School a few weeks ago, with the aim to promote agricultural and environmental careers to both teachers and students.
Carla Miles, project supervisor, expresses her hope to sow the seed on 7 and 8 year level students concerning the exciting prospects of the Agriculture field and the developing career choices.
Mrs Miles said that an initiative called One Thousand Conversations, a part of the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse project has revealed a low comprehension and interest on available jobs in the agricultural field among students, parents, and teachers.
Regionally she admitted that there is a decrease on the number of students choosing agricultural and environmental courses and that includes geography and environmental sciences.
Still, she acknowledges that across the Australia and beyond, there is an improved interest for following studies and careers in the agricultural sector.
The day event accommodated eight guests including agricultural workers, orchardists, and environmental planners sharing the stories and their duties as well as the good aspects of their job with the students. The teachers also received the same information in an effort to support their understanding of the area, careers, and opportunities for developing the connection between school schedule and the agricultural career field.
