Cassandra grew up in a farming family, but her family owned a small hobby farm that worked in timber on the NSW central coast. She notes that growing up in Ourimbah on that little farm was far different from her life here in Forbes on the farm.
Farmers are always on the go, and their work almost always goes unappreciated. For most city dwellers farms and farmers work are out of sight and out of mind. In the past few years though, a movement has grown to showcase the work of farmers on social media.

The 2018 AgriFutures Rural Women's Award for South Australia was awarded to Alex Thomas. Alex will go on in September of this year to represent the state at the National Final in Canberra. The award includes a $10,000 bursary that is provided by AgriFutures Australia. The award is designed to provide funding for a project to prevent permanent injuries and deaths in agriculture industry workplaces.

Ms Thomas describes herself as a "die-hard pastoralist's daughter". She now lives in Adelaide but grew up in Parnaroo Station which can be found east of Yunta. She is excited and honoured to have the opportunity to represent South Australia in Canberra and to meet the other finalists in Wagga Wagga at the event in September.
"I'm looking forward to our networking and sharing our project ideas," she said.

"I plan to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way to promote safer work practices on farms and boats.

Ms Thomas notes that she hopes to inspire people to not just look at compliance and paperwork but also to look into taking actions that will be meaningful and instrumental in saving lives. She hopes that this does not stop in the workplace but will be a conversation that will continue into communities, homes and even other industries across Australia.

With the bursary from the AgriFutures foundation, Ms. Thomas is hoping to start many conversations about safety and health in the agriculture industry as well as in the fisheries industry across the entirety of Australia.

She plans to do this with her #PlantASeedForSafety campaign. She notes that this has always been her dream and that she can't wait to get started.

The Award was issued at the Three Gums Bistro in Hahndorf at a Monday night ceremony. The award was given by Scott Ashby the Chief Executive of Primary Industries and Regions SA. The latter is the supporting state agency for the South Australia AfriFutures Rural Women's Award.

Other Finalists from included Lauren Thiel from Adelaide and Jo Bonner from Marree received acknowledgement for their commitment to regional South Australia and also their leadership qualities.

Territory and state winners of the 2018 AgriFutures Rural Women's Award will meet in Wagga Wagga between the 3rd and 5th of July 2018 to attend the AgriFutures Rural Women's Award workshop. Here they will also undergo the national selection panel interviews.
The next event after July will be the Award Gala Dinner and National Announcement. This event will take place on the 12th of September 2018.

The Gala Dinner will take place on a Wednesday and will take place in Canberra. It is here that the National runner-up, as well as the national winner of the award, will be announced in the night. It is an inspiring event for the regional finalists to look forward to and one that can seal their name in the history books of the agriculture industry.
