The National Farmer Federation have released a new guide aimed at helping the 40,000 working holiday makers each year that come to Australia and find work in the Agriculture industry. The guide covers what to expect from employment in the sector and who to contact if they run into any problems.
Farmers look to the supply of backer packers willing to work during their stay in Australia for everything from fruit picking and pruning to managing heavy machinery. The work can be physically challenging and the conditions very different from what the backpackers are used to.
While the opportunity to experience the culture of rural Australia and learn new skills is rewarding, workers need to know what their rights and responsibilities are and who to contact if they need help or have any questions.
The guide covers things like:
• The Visa requirements to be able to work
• Eligablity for a second year visa
• Documentaion required to have a workers 88 days of specified work recognised
• Rights and responsibilities as a worker
• Checklist of what to expect in rural workplaces
• Guide to working safely on farms
