The results showed that most students think of agriculture as a lonely and remote job with few options for career progression.

The scholarship includes work placement, mentors and networking opportunities with industry leaders.

For the 2018 round there have been a few changes in the program. The scholarship is now awarded for the first two years of a students course instead of the duration. Students can re-apply for a second scholarship to see out the remainder of their degree.

Newly eligible degrees include (STEM) Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths that include major subjects that are aligned with the agriculture sector.

The classic ag degrees including AgriBusiness remain eligible.

This year there are also three additional scholarships for students in finance or banking degrees with a keen interest in agriculture.

AgriFutures Australia managing director John Harvey said to build prosperous and sustainable rural industries it was essential to focus on the next generation of leaders.

“It is vital to build the skills, capacity, leadership and knowledge of Australia’s future rural leaders,” Mr Harvey said.

Current research estimates that there are four jobs available in Agriculture for each agricultural degree graduate.
